Reader Mode Guide – How to Read Better Online

Practical tips for using reader mode, text-to-speech, and dark mode reading. Reduce distraction, eye strain, and improve your reading habits.

Why you need reader mode

Modern websites are built to distract you. Every article page includes:

  • Ads (banner ads, sidebar ads, native ads disguised as articles)
  • Tracking pixels and analytics scripts
  • Auto-playing video players
  • Cookie consent banners
  • Subscribe overlays and pop-ups
  • Related articles sidebars
  • Infinite scroll recommendations

Reader mode strips all of this away so you can focus on the text. Studies show that removing visual clutter improves reading comprehension and retention.

1. Turn on reader mode

Install Clean Reader and open any article. Click the extension icon or press Alt+R to enter reader mode. The page reformats instantly to show just the article text in a clean, centered column.

Pro tip: You can toggle reader mode on and off instantly—press Esc to exit and return to the original page.

2. Dark mode reading reduces eye strain

Reading on a bright screen at night triggers blue light exposure, which can disrupt your sleep. Dark mode (sometimes called "night mode") inverts the colors so white text appears on a dark background.

Benefits:

  • Reduces eye strain when reading before bed
  • Lowers blue light exposure
  • Better contrast for people with certain vision impairments
  • Saves battery on devices with OLED screens

Clean Reader includes Light, Dark, and Sepia themes. Sepia is particularly good for long reading sessions because it mimics the warm tone of paper.

3. Use text-to-speech to listen while you work

Can't find time to read? Use read-aloud (text-to-speech) to listen to articles while commuting, cooking, exercising, or doing chores.

How to use it:

  1. Enter reader mode (Alt+R)
  2. Click the "Listen" button or press P
  3. The article reads aloud. The current sentence is highlighted so you can follow along if you want.
  4. Use Pause/Stop to control playback

Pro tip: Listening at 1.5x or 2x speed is faster for skimming; slower speeds (0.75x) work better for complex material like research papers or technical blogs.

4. Adjust font size for comfortable reading

Not all screens are created equal. A font size that looks good on a laptop might be too small on a phone or too large on a desktop monitor.

Use the A− and A+ buttons in reader mode to adjust the text size. You can also switch between serif, sans-serif, and monospace fonts depending on your preference and reading context.

Accessibility note: People with dyslexia often prefer sans-serif fonts and larger text. If you have low vision, increase the font size significantly—it's free and takes one click.

Reader mode on different websites

Clean Reader works on news sites, blogs, research papers, documentation, Wikipedia, and more. The extraction algorithm is smart about finding the actual article and filtering out junk, but different sites have different structures.

If reader mode looks off on a site:

  • Exit and refresh: Press Esc and reload the page, then try reader mode again.
  • Check the original design: Reader mode pulls text from the page as the site designed it; if the site has poor markup, the reader might miss some sections.
  • Report it: If reader mode consistently misses content on a site, let us know via the Chrome Web Store feedback form.

Reading tips for better comprehension

Beyond using reader mode, here are science-backed ways to read better online:

  • Take notes: Highlight or jot down key points. The act of writing forces deeper processing.
  • Skim before you read: Read the title, headings, and first/last paragraph to decide if the article is worth your full attention.
  • Read actively: Ask questions as you read: "Do I agree?" "How does this apply to my life?" "What's the evidence?"
  • Avoid multitasking: Close other tabs and notifications. Reading requires focus.
  • Use reader mode + listen for long articles: For 20+ minute reads, switch between reading silently and listening aloud every few minutes to stay engaged.
  • Take breaks: Every 20–30 minutes, look away from the screen for 20 seconds to reduce eye strain (the "20-20-20 rule").

Accessibility: reader mode for everyone

Reader mode is an accessibility feature. It helps:

  • Low-vision readers: Increase font size and use high-contrast themes (dark mode).
  • Dyslexic readers: Switch to sans-serif fonts and larger text sizes. Listening to text-to-speech can reduce cognitive load.
  • People with attention disorders: Removing visual clutter reduces distractions and improves focus.
  • Non-native speakers: Reading text-to-speech helps with pronunciation and comprehension.
  • People with motor disabilities: One-click reader mode activation (no need to scroll or click multiple buttons) is more accessible than manual content reformatting.

Reader mode is not a luxury—it's a tool for equitable access to online content.
