Overview

Clean Reader ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how our Chrome extension handles your data.

Bottom line: Clean Reader does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data. Everything runs locally in your browser.

What data we collect

Clean Reader collects no data. The extension:

  • Does not track your browsing history or reading habits.
  • Does not send article text or any page content to our servers.
  • Does not collect analytics, cookies, or identifiers.
  • Does not require an account or login.
  • Does not access your bookmarks, passwords, or other browser data.

Local data storage

Clean Reader stores only your preferences locally on your device using chrome.storage.local:

  • Theme choice (light, dark, sepia)
  • Font size
  • Font family (serif, sans, mono)

This data never leaves your device and is deleted if you uninstall the extension.

Permissions explained

Clean Reader requests the following permissions:

  • activeTab — to run the reader on the page you're viewing.
  • scripting — to inject the reader overlay and text-to-speech functionality.
  • storage — to remember your theme and font preferences across sessions.

We do not use these permissions to collect or transmit any data.

Third-party services

Clean Reader uses:

  • Web Speech API — a browser-native feature for text-to-speech. This runs entirely in your browser; no audio is sent anywhere.
  • No third-party libraries or CDNs — the extension is self-contained.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of any material changes by updating the "last updated" date. Continued use of Clean Reader after changes constitutes acceptance.
